“A lot of times, the information doesn’t get to our community,” explained Lamar Wilson, an Academy instructor and founder of Black Bitcoin Billionaire. “Not because people are being intentionally discriminatory, it’s because they’re not being intentional about getting the information there.”

Many of the inhabitants, he added, were able to understand even complex and technical ideas such as Bitcoin mining once they were explained to them. They were also told how Bitcoin may be used to create “generational wealth,” which many attendances found appealing.

Wilson, in particular, was intrigued by how Bitcoin can be used to preserve the riches of historically persecuted communities from confiscation. Mariela Regalado, a Marcy resident, saw Bitcoin as a tool that can assist protect her daughter’s financial future.

“I’m stacking stacks for her, and I probably wasn’t gonna be able to say that back in June before the Academy, but now I can, because now I know what all that means,” she said.

Wilson and Regalado both emphasized that students at the academy were not forced to buy or trade Bitcoin, but rather were merely informed about it. “It always felt like we were at a family meal, and the cousin who discovered Bitcoin was telling everyone else about it,” Regalado explained.
