Asia's First Crypto Asset ETFs Listed on HKEx Today
Two cryptocurrency ETFs were listed today, including the Southern Dongfeng Bitcoin Futures ETF (03066) and the Southern Dongfeng Ether Futures ETF (03068) managed by Southern Dongfeng Asset Management Limited, which track standardized, cash-settled bitcoin futures contracts and ethereum futures contracts traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (Chicagoland).
The two crypto asset ETFs listed today add to Hong Kong's increasingly rich and diverse ecosystem of exchange-traded products, according to HKEx Chief Operating Officer and Co-Head of Markets, Mr. K.Y. Yiu. These new products will provide investors with the opportunity to participate in digital asset investments for the first time in Asia, and reflect its focus on the digital economy and market demand. Expect to see more thematic ETFs and new products in digital assets in the coming months.
It is reported that ETFs are one of the fastest growing businesses in HKEx's market, and the product range will continue to expand in 2022, including the launch of the first meta-universe ETF, the first carbon futures ETF and the first blockchain ETF during the year, and the inclusion of ETFs in the Shanghai-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect for the first time.
In addition, the average daily turnover of Hong Kong Exchange Traded Products (ETPs, including ETFs and leveraged and inverse products) in the first 11 months of this year was $11.8 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 50%, reflecting that ETPs are becoming increasingly popular among investors. As of November this year, there were 168 ETPs listed on the HKEx, with a market value of $373.5 billion.
