The Bitcoin Academy, Jack Dorsey, and Jay-Z’s (Shawn Carters) Bitcoin teaching initiative have completed their first iteration.

After 12 weeks, the campaign concluded with a $1000 Bitcoin airdrop to those participants who chose to accept an award.

The Parting Gift from Jack and Jay Z

Both Jay-Z and Jack Dorsey personally funded the entire initiative, including the final airdrop. Though it’s unclear how many people got the airdrop, Jay’s mother reported in an email that the program was attended by over 350 Marcy residents.

The Bitcoin Academy was introduced in early June as an in-person initiative aimed at providing Bitcoin instruction and services to residents of Marcy Houses in New York, where Jay Z grew up. It lasted from June 22nd to September 7th of this year.

The organizers were upfront about participants obtaining various benefits, such as free MiFi devices, one-year data plans, and cellphones, at the time. Other benefits, such as the program’s free daycare, persuaded some people to attend. The Bitcoin gift, on the other hand, was a last-minute surprise.

What the Course Taught

The program addressed topics such as “Wealth Building and Assets,” “Why Decentralization Matters,” “Staying Safe from Scammers,” “Bitcoin & Taxes,” and “Careers in Crypto,” among others. All courses were videotaped and are still available online for Marcy residents exclusively.
